Genre Analysis- the Devil Made Me Do It

The Devil made me do it is a mixed documentary, this is clear as it contains observation, narration, interviews, cutaways, pictures and action. it shows themes of death and the way the music industry and artists can influence young peoples actions.

Its a linear narrative with exposition and conflict set up right from the beginning, with the audience are always being asked various questions as we are led to believe Marilyn Manson is a 'puppet master' the documentary ends leaving the opinion up to the audience.

The 1st shot of the documentary starts with an Establishing crane shot of the small village, making it seem small and vulnerable to attacks. when footage of the concerts are being used they show a lot of over head angles giving the impression they are being taken in by his music, also by using low angle shots of marilyn manson shows him in-control and powerful.

The mise en scene is relevant throughout the whole documentary, for example interviewees were all interviewed in their natural environments. Marilyn manson was interviewed behind stage and in his changing room. When they started talking to the girls solicitor, they used an xcu shot on her face and also dressed her in red clothing showing her power in the situation.

Sound effects were used often in the reconstructions to unnerve the viewers and also to back up the narration to build the tension and make it sound chilling.

Cutaways were used a lot throughout interviews to break up the speech and to back up the point being said.

Archive material such as the nuns funeral, news interviews and the court hearing were used. The documentary contained very plain white graphics simply to tell the audience who the interviewee was and their relevance. They were a small font as it didn't need to distract the audience attention.
